Choosing Between Two Good Options

Tradeoffs & Decision MakingMedium1:30

Tell me about a time you had to choose between two reasonable approaches or solutions, where both had clear merits. How did you evaluate them and make a final decision?

I'm not looking for a case where one option was obviously better. I want to hear about a genuine dilemma where smart people could have gone either way. What criteria did you use, and are you still confident in the choice?

How to approach it

  • Hint 1

Choose an example where both options were genuinely viable -- not one where you are setting up a straw man to make your choice look obvious.

  • Hint 2

Walk through the evaluation criteria. Did you weigh technical factors, team capability, timeline, maintainability, user impact, or something else? How did you decide which criteria mattered most?

  • Hint 3

Share whether you had to convince others of your choice. Did anyone disagree? How did you handle that, and what happened in the end?
