Working With a Difficult Teammate

Teamwork & CollaborationEasy1:30

Tell me about a time you had to work closely with someone whose working style or personality clashed with yours. How did you make it work?

The interviewer is looking for: your adaptability when you can't choose who you work with, how you find common ground with people who are different from you, whether you focus on the work rather than personal friction, and what you learned about collaboration from the experience.

How to approach it

  • Hint 1

Pick someone whose working style genuinely clashed with yours -- not someone who was objectively unprofessional. The best examples involve a legitimate style difference: one person is detail-oriented and the other moves fast, or one prefers async and the other wants to pair on everything.

  • Hint 2

Describe the specific friction points and what you did to address them. Did you have a direct conversation about working styles? Did you adapt your approach? Find a compromise? Show that you took initiative to improve the dynamic rather than just tolerating it.

  • Hint 3

Focus on what you learned about yourself and about working with diverse styles. The best answers show that the experience expanded your range as a collaborator and that you discovered strengths in the other person's approach that you initially found frustrating.
