Tell me about a time you helped a teammate grow -- whether through formal mentoring, pair programming, code reviews, or just being available. What did you do, and how did you see them develop over time?
The interviewer is looking for: your investment in others' growth, your ability to teach and give feedback effectively, patience and empathy, and whether you can point to tangible development in the person you helped.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Pick a specific person and a specific skill or area where they grew. Avoid vague mentoring -- the best examples track one person's development arc over weeks or months.
- Hint 2
Describe your approach: did you give them stretch assignments, pair with them, create a learning plan, or adjust your code review style? Explain how you tailored your mentoring to their specific needs and learning style.
- Hint 3
Show the outcome through the mentee's growth, not your own accomplishment. The best answers point to something the mentee can now do independently that they couldn't before, and reflect on what you learned about teaching.
