Tell me about a time you identified a problem or opportunity and took action on it, even though it wasn't part of your official responsibilities. Walk me through what you noticed, what you did, and what happened as a result.
The interviewer is looking for: your ability to spot gaps and act without waiting for permission, how you navigated the ambiguity of acting outside your defined role, and the impact your initiative had on the team or project.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Choose a situation where you genuinely stepped outside your defined role -- not just doing extra work within your job description. The best examples involve noticing something others missed or were ignoring.
- Hint 2
Include specifics: what exactly did you notice, why did you decide to act, who did you involve, and what resistance (if any) did you face? Show your thought process for why you didn't just escalate it.
- Hint 3
Frame the outcome in terms of measurable impact where possible. Also address what you learned about when it's appropriate to take initiative versus when to defer to established processes.
