Describe a time you convinced your team or manager to adopt a different approach than what was originally planned. How did you build your case, and what was the outcome?
The interviewer is looking for: your ability to influence through evidence and communication rather than authority, how you handled disagreement or skepticism, and whether your influence led to a better outcome.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Pick a situation where the original plan was reasonable but you saw a better path. Avoid examples where the original idea was obviously bad -- the best stories show you improving on something that was already decent.
- Hint 2
Detail your persuasion approach: did you use data, prototypes, analogies, or pilot programs? Explain who you needed to convince and what their concerns were. Show that you listened, not just talked.
- Hint 3
Describe the result of adopting your approach. If it worked well, quantify it. If it didn't work perfectly, explain what you learned. Either way, reflect on what made your influence effective or what you'd do differently.
