Tell me about a time you missed a deadline or significantly underestimated the effort required for a project. What happened, how did you communicate it, and what did you do about it?
The interviewer is looking for: how you handle the realization that you won't deliver on time, your communication approach with stakeholders, whether you take steps to mitigate the impact, and how you've improved your estimation and planning since.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Pick a real missed deadline where the delay had consequences -- not a soft internal target that no one cared about. The best examples involve a commitment to stakeholders or customers where the miss created real problems.
- Hint 2
Walk through the timeline: when did you realize you would miss the deadline, how early did you communicate it, and what alternatives or mitigations did you propose? Include your stakeholders' reaction and how you managed it.
- Hint 3
Reflect on why the estimation was off -- was it scope creep, unknown complexity, dependencies, or something else? Describe specific changes you made to your estimation or planning process afterward. Show that you have a system now that you didn't have then.
