Describe a time there was a conflict or tension within your team that was affecting the work. What role did you play in resolving it, and what happened?
The interviewer is looking for: your ability to recognize interpersonal dynamics, whether you step up to address conflict rather than avoid it, your conflict resolution approach, and how the resolution affected the team.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Choose a real interpersonal conflict -- not just a technical disagreement. The best examples involve tension that was affecting team dynamics, morale, or productivity. You don't have to be the team lead in this story.
- Hint 2
Describe what you actually did: did you have one-on-one conversations, mediate a group discussion, escalate to a manager, or something else? Be specific about your approach and why you chose it. Include what you heard from each side.
- Hint 3
Show the resolution and its lasting impact. Did the team dynamic improve? Did the people involved rebuild trust? If the resolution was imperfect, what did you learn about handling conflict? Avoid framing yourself as the hero who saved everyone.
