Tell me about a time you had to work with a particularly difficult or demanding stakeholder -- someone who was hard to please, kept changing requirements, or was creating friction with your team. How did you manage the relationship?
The interviewer is looking for: your ability to manage up and across, how you handle unreasonable demands without burning bridges, your empathy for stakeholder motivations, and whether you can find productive working relationships even with difficult people.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Pick a stakeholder who was genuinely difficult to work with -- not just someone who had high standards. The best examples involve someone whose behavior or demands were creating real problems for your team's ability to deliver.
- Hint 2
Explain what made them difficult (changing requirements, unrealistic timelines, poor communication, micromanagement) and then describe your strategy for managing the relationship. Include specific conversations or agreements you put in place. Show that you tried to understand their underlying motivations and pressures.
- Hint 3
Share how the relationship evolved and what impact your management of it had on the project and team. Even if the person remained difficult, describe how you created a workable dynamic. Reflect on what you learned about managing difficult relationships and what you would do differently.
