Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager on an important decision. How did you handle it, and what was the outcome?
The interviewer is looking for: your ability to push back respectfully, how you balance conviction with deference, whether you can disagree and commit, and your maturity in navigating power dynamics.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Choose a genuine disagreement where you had a substantive reason to push back -- not a trivial preference difference. The best examples involve a decision that could have real consequences for the team or product.
- Hint 2
Walk through how you raised your concern: the timing, the framing, the evidence you brought. Show that you were respectful but direct. Include your manager's perspective and demonstrate that you genuinely understood their reasoning.
- Hint 3
Describe the resolution. If your manager changed their mind, explain why your argument was compelling. If they didn't, explain how you committed to the decision and what happened. Either way, reflect on what you learned about disagreeing upward.
