Bridging Technical and Business Language

Communication & InfluenceEasy1:30

Tell me about a time you had to translate a complex technical situation into business terms for executives or non-technical stakeholders so they could make an informed decision. What was the situation, how did you frame it, and what decision resulted?

The interviewer is looking for: your ability to tailor technical information for a business audience, whether you focus on impact and tradeoffs rather than implementation details, and how your communication directly enabled a business decision.

Note: This is specifically about enabling a decision, not just explaining a concept. Focus on how your framing shaped the outcome.

How to approach it

  • Hint 1

Choose a situation where the technical reality had direct business implications -- a tradeoff between speed and quality, a security risk that needed investment, or a technical debt situation affecting product roadmap. The decision-maker needed your translation to act.

  • Hint 2

Walk through how you framed the technical situation: what analogies or frameworks did you use? What did you leave out and why? How did you quantify the impact in terms the audience cared about (revenue, risk, time-to-market, customer impact)?

  • Hint 3

Describe the decision that resulted and how your framing influenced it. Reflect on whether your translation was accurate and fair, or whether you realize in hindsight that you oversimplified or introduced bias. The best answers show awareness of the responsibility that comes with being the technical translator.
