Tell me about a time you had to give difficult or constructive feedback to a peer or teammate. What was the situation, how did you deliver it, and how did they receive it?
The interviewer is looking for: your willingness to have uncomfortable conversations, how you balance honesty with empathy, your feedback delivery approach, and whether the feedback led to positive change.
How to approach it
- Hint 1
Choose a situation where the feedback was genuinely uncomfortable to give -- not just a code review comment, but something about someone's work habits, communication style, or performance that was affecting the team. The best examples involve feedback you were nervous to deliver.
- Hint 2
Walk through your preparation and delivery: how did you decide to give the feedback, when and where did you do it, how did you frame it, and what specific language did you use? Show that you were deliberate about making it constructive rather than critical. Include their initial reaction.
- Hint 3
Describe the aftermath: did the person change their behavior? How did it affect your working relationship? If the feedback wasn't well received, what did you learn about delivery? Reflect on the balance between being honest and being kind.
